Primark retail chain will open its first store on the corner of Wenceslas Square and Opletalova Street. The Irish apparel brand is set to open its doors next May.
The 4,700 sqm store is likely to attract not just crowds of tourists to the top of the iconic square, but many Czechs as well who were previously willing to travel to Dresden just to see what deals the price-conscious store had to offer.
But there is something more. Primark decided to expand to Brno and open a second store in the Olympia shopping center in 2022.
The new store spans 3,600 square meters. The contract was signed by Primark with the shopping center on Wednesday.
“Since the announcement of the opening in Prague, we have been looking for a second location that will become part of our expansion in the Czech Republic. As the second-largest city in the country, Brno offers a great opportunity to reach other customers,” said Jose Luis Martinez de Larramendi, Primark’s Retail Manager for the US, Central, and Eastern Europe.
Primark sells everything from baby and kids clothes to women and men’s apparel, homewares, accessories, beauty products, and confectionery.
“Primark is one of the world’s leading clothing retailers. The Central European market is important for the brand,” said Jan Kotrbáček, Head of Retail for Cushman & Wakefield.
Much of what they sell is fast fashion, products based on current fashion-show trends. They do this by having a high turnover rate with items sold quickly after they are made.
They also have low advertising costs, as the brand has many faithful customers already.
The company was founded in Ireland in 1969 under the name Penneys. When the store expanded to the United Kingdom in the 1970s, it had to rename itself to Primark due to the American rival J. C. Penney. Today Primark operates over 350 stores in eleven countries across Europe and America.
