Drivers in Prague Spend Up to 57 Hours a Year in Traffic Jams

In Prague, drivers spend an average of 57 hours a year in rush hour traffic. Smaller Czech cities are also increasingly plagued by traffic jams. Drivers in Brno or Ostrava do not escape similar problems. However, other Czech cities are also increasingly plagued by traffic jams – for example, drivers spend an average of 35 hours a year in České Budějovice and one hour less in Pardubice. Along with the increase in the number and likelihood of traffic collapses, the average emissions released into the air during journeys are also increasing. In Prague, for example, each petrol car emits an average of 842 kg of CO2 in the time it spends in traffic each year. KinoBus is Back in Prague: This Year it Will Offer 22 Films at 11 Locations

Summer cinemas are synonymous with Prague. The traditional summer cinema in Prague is the Kinobus from Dopravní podnik, which started its 16th season on Monday 26 June. Half of the films screened will be from Czech filmmakers. Foreign films include Top Gun: Maverick, What Have We All Done to Whom, Super-Blb, The Good Boss, and the animated film Puss in Boots. Screenings will start after dark, depending on current conditions. Admission to the film screening is always free. Capacity is 200 seats and 25 blankets will be available for rent on site for a refundable deposit of CZK 100. However, the transport company recommends that spectators take their own blankets in case it gets cold in the evening. There is also a new refreshment stand for this year’s tour. There will be beer from the Bakalář brewery, prosecco, Aperol spritz, and quesadilla with jerked meat. SOS Children’s Villages is a partner of the DPP Cinema Bus again this year. Irritation Index: Czechs Welcome Tourists in Their Regions with Open Arms

Tourism in the Czech Republic is highly valued by its residents, especially those living in tourist-exposed areas, who recognise even better the benefits of this sector for the country than the rest of the population.  According to a survey by the Institute of Tourism of the Czech Tourism Office, CzechTourism, thee overall rate for the so-called irritation index was 2.02 for tourism-exposed areas and 1.89 for the entire country, indicating a relatively low level of concern about tourism. Notably, the irritation index is even lower when considering the entire Czech Republic. This suggests that Czechs are aware of tourism’s positive impacts and advantages, warmly embracing the presence of travellers. Based on the survey results, residents of Náchod, Hřensk, and Bezděz expressed a moderate level of irritation towards tourism, with respective scores of 2.63, 2.32, and 2.29. Czech Police Break Up International Ring Smuggling 1,000 Migrants to Western Europe

Czech police said Tuesday that they have broken up an international ring suspected of smuggling migrants from Turkey to western Europe. A total of 14 suspects – 13 foreigners whose countries of origin were not specified and a Czech citizens – have been arrested in raids across the country in recent days, police said. The suspects allegedly organized a transport of at least 1,000 illegal migrants since 2021, earning at least 1 million euros. The smugglers face up to 16 years in prison if tried and convicted. The migrants have been using the Czech Republic as a transit route on their way to the West, officials said, and mostly do not apply for asylum in Czechia, as the country is also known. The Czech police have arrested 14 people who are part of an international organised criminal group accused of organising and facilitating large-scale illegal migration from Turkey to Czechia and other EU countries. The police seized approximately CZK 900,000 in cash and two cars. The detainees face up to 16 years in prison.   In the first five months of this year, Czechia provided Ukraine with 24 tanks, 76 infantry fighting vehicles and 645 anti-tank guided missiles, PM Petr Fiala announced at a press conference at the Ministry of Defence on Tuesday. In addition, the Czech government also sent 16 special air defence system vehicles, and 57,000 cartridges for cannons.   The police prosecuted 3,418 people on suspicion of drug offences in the Czech Republic last year, up 272 from 2021, according to the annual report released by the National Drug Control Center (NPC). The highest number of offences (559) were in the capital of Prague. Renovated South Moravian Railway Service in Czechia Is Now Open for Passengers

The European Commission has announced the inauguration and opening of the renovated railway service in South Moravia calling it a significant development for the region of Czechia that was made through the Cohesion Policy. In a statement issued on June 22, the same authority stated that adding 37 new electric units to the railway line would undoubtedly positively impact the congestion issues during peak hours. By introducing these new units, the capacity of the South-Moravian railway will be enhanced, allowing for a smoother and more efficient transportation experience for the about 22 million passengers who rely on this railway each year. “The new railway units will provide efficient rail services and contribute to making the European Green Deal a reality. I am happy that this project is being inaugurated today and will now concretely improve the life of Czech citizens on South Moravia,” the Commissioner for Cohesion and Reforms, Elisa Ferreira, said on Friday. Prague City Has Big Plans for Major Expansion of Tram Network

In the most recent debate from the “Great Changes of Prague” cycle, Deputy Mayor for Transport Zdeněk Hřib and Deputy Mayor for Territorial Development Petr Hlaváček presented new projects that continue the tram boom started in the previous election period. At a debate at the Center for Architecture and Urban Planning (CAMP), they presented the tram ring and further extension of the existing tram lines, the length of which will soon reach 150 km. “Public transport is the backbone of every city,” said Hřib. “In the case of Prague, its role is absolutely essential. Czech opposition party ANO plans to remain with its current European partner, the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE), after European Parliament elections next year, deputy chairman Karel Havlíček said on Monday. Místní Místním – the NGO that Provides Small Services to People in Need

Místní místním is an NGO that connects local businesses into a network that provides small services to people in need, free of charge. Prague Morning spoke to two members of the organization. The main focus of Místní místním is the creation of a “Solidarity Network” of local businesses that help, support, and empower those in need, such as people without a home or the people with lower income, through providing services including free Wi-Fi, free water, free food, and free entertainment. Místní místním’s “Solidarity Network” currently consists of 23 places, covering 8 Prague districts. The network includes multiple cafés, restaurants, community centers, two second-hand shops, two libraries, and a theater. Increase in Online Drug Trafficking: Social Networks as a New Distribution Channel

According to the National Drug Control Centre, the sale of drugs has increasingly moved to the internet, especially via social networks such as Telegram. Last year, online drug trafficking recorded a significant increase, according to the annual report of the Czech National Drug Control Centre (NPC) published today. Traffickers use not only hidden websites but mainly social networks to send banned substances to consumers. Payment is often made by means of cryptocurrencies. In particular, the sale of drugs via the social network Telegram has significantly increased. The Czech police emphasize that the anonymity, relative ease, and wide range of substances that can be purchased on virtual markets are in no way inferior to traditional street sales. According to the NPC, last year mainly new psychoactive substances and substances with anabolic or hormonal effects were offered on publicly accessible internet platforms. The distribution takes place via e-shops whose domains are mostly located abroad. Demand is particularly high for substances such as cocaine, methamphetamine, MDMA, marijuana, and drugs with antidepressant effects. June 27, 1950: The Execution of Milada Horáková

Since 2004, the Czech Republic has commemorated June 27th as the Day of the Victims of the Communist Regime. Exactly 73 years ago, on June 27th, 1950 at 5:35 am in the courtyard of Prague’s Pankrác prison, Milada Horáková, a brave lawyer and a top politician of democratic Czechoslovakia, was hanged by the communist regime. Her opinions and criticism of the regime had made her a target for the Secret Police, who put her in prison on trumped-up charges of conspiring to overthrow the republic. After a disgraceful trial, Czechoslovakia’s “first working-class president”, Klement Gottwald signed the order to murder her, despite lots of polite begging to save her life by Albert Einstein, Bertrand Russell, Winston Churchill, Eleanor Roosevelt, and many others. Each defendant was ordered to read from a script during the debacle that was broadcast over the radio. Horáková defended herself instead. She and three of the 12 others received the death penalty. Milada Horáková was a Czech politician, who was part of underground resistance movement with the German occupation of Czechoslovakia in 1939. Prague to Host Re-Enactment of Charles Bridge Foundation Ceremony

The Charles Bridge Museum in Prague will mark the 666th anniversary of the foundation of the Charles Bridge on July 9 (Sunday). All of them will take place in the early morning and are free of charge. At 5:00 a.m., there will be a historical costume procession with the King of Bohemia and Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV and his wife. A medieval procession of knights on horseback, musicians, entertainers, city officials, and other entourage members will march from the Lesser Town to the Old Town Bridge Tower.
