The long-awaited reconstruction of the Negrelli Viaduct, a railway bridge over the Vltava between Karlín and Bubny is under way, with the completion of works expected around 2020.
The project has become the first step in the construction of a new railway connection between Prague and Kladno with a connection to Václav Havel Airport, which developers hope will bring new business opportunities to the area.
“The contract is signed and the building site is handed over,” Marek Illiaš of the Railway Infrastructure Administration (SŽDC) said on Tuesday.
Reconstruction of the Viaduct, originally built in 1850, will begin in July, and will affect the routes of certain train lines for the duration of the construction. Trains in the direction of Kladno will be terminated at a specially arranged stop near the Vltavska Metro station and others redirected.
The reconstruction will also affect the activities of various summer sport programs under the viaduct. The sporting activities will be moved to other places in Karlín, such as the Karlín barracks.
A new offering for the Negrelli Viaduct will be the 60 spaces for cultural an occupational use the project creates. The architect Vasourková, with the SŽDC, the city council and the Institute for Planning and Development of the City of Prague said the vision for the area is clear: park, bistro, craft workshops, small business offices and more.
