Prague authorities are actively discussing a study to examine creating a cable car connecting Podbaba in Prague 6 to the zoo in Prague 7 and then continuing on to Bohnice in Prague 8. The route would cross the Vltava river.
While there are currently two ferries that take passengers across the banks of the Vltava from Podbaba in Prague 6 to Troja in Prague 7, their limited operation means they aren’t always a reliable method of transportation for most.
Prague 6 spokesman Martin Churavý said the district finds the idea appealing and is not against it; Prague 8 Mayor Roman Petrus said he had heard talk of a cable car from Bohnice to the zoo many times, and he is waiting for more details.
"It is important for us that the cable car does not pass over the zoo. This is a quiet and peaceful place, and the road will spoil the natural landscape of Troja valley. The best option would be, of course, a tram,"- said the director of the zoo, Miroslav Bobek.
Prague 1 Mayor Oldřich Lomecký (TOP 09), however, is not in favor of the plan. He says the district needs projects with “real quality.”
The total cost of the project is estimated to be in the range of one billion crowns.
