Prague Mayor Adriana Krnáčová (ANO) urges Uber to respect the decision of the European Court that declared the smartphone app as a transport services company, requiring it to accept stricter regulation and licensing within the EU as a taxi operator.

"I urge Uber to stop making fun of the Czech citizens and to start respecting the law. If Uber works under the same conditions as in other European countries, the problem would not exist," the Mayor wrote in a letter.

Uber had denied it was a transport company, arguing instead it was a computer services business with operations that should be subject to an EU directive governing e-commerce and prohibiting restrictions on the establishment of such organisations.

There are currently 2,000 Uber drivers in Prague, most of them work for the UberPop service. According to municipal data, there are 8,000 taxi drivers in Prague.
